Completed Review and Rating system in Resources 6G
I remember a few request for version 1.5, about more powerful system of reviews and ratings. At a moment we have a custom Rating field and comments system, but we still didn't have it in normal group style like for example it is for Sobi - demo or for ReviewforJoomla - demo
For version 1.6 it will be nice to have a normal reviews and ratings in Resources.

I presented some video how it is already done. You can review and make your final notes.

... especially an improved version of a multirating field ... the existing one is not really so "user-friendly" ... something similiar to the examples of the thread starter would be much better.

I checked demo links. In Black Ice it will be possible with Relate field. User will be able to add new children to parent record which are reviews.

Child record may contain multiple rating field and other useful staff.

This system will be much, much more flexible. I mean in SOBI and RFJ reviews is a special object with limited functionality for making review. I mean those are great extensions and looks very neat but In Black Ice it will be more advanced.

Only one problem with that. It is not out-of-the-box solution. I mean, there is no option like ENABLE REVIEW for content type. One will have to build his review system manually.

But I hope to create nice explanatory video on how to use relate fields. One of the examples will be adding review to any content type.

    Hello, Sergey.

At present version it's also possible to make this by relate field help. From my site example, I have parent article Hotel and childs - reviews of this hotel. But in present version are some problems with this method.

    1) for one Hotel can be hundreds of reviews. This childs are impossible to break by pages, so if to load parent page, it will be death for the server.
    2) every child had own ratings, but it's impossible to calculate average rating of all this childs and to show this result in top of the parent article, like it is in demo.

That's why I say that Review and Rating function are still in non-group style. We have all instruments to make this, but they are not finished for the logical end.

Not really. We significantly improved Black Ice. I do not think it will load server much. At least not as much as Resources 1.5 does. Also we are already discussing Ajax pagination for Records field, Record list module and Relate Parent/Children fields.
    Xtream
    2) every child had own ratings, but it's impossible to calculate average rating of all this children and to show this result in top of the parent article, like it is in demo.
That is true. But I do not see average rating on demo. Every review have few ratings and average rating too. But I cannot see in parent average rating of all average ratings of reviews.

But even though, it will be not hard to calculate average rating of parent. That is what we do not and I think we will add this feature to rating. Option to allow rate or show rating summary based on children.

On picture is explained, what I mean under "to show average rating (depends on all reviews) in top of the parent article".

And the same is in this demo. You can see reviews on the bottom of the parent article (we can do the same, using relate field). On top of this parent article, you can see, near the title block, average rating of all childs reviews. And on top of the reviews block, you can see average rating by all review options.

"We significantly improved Black Ice. I do not think it will load server much", That's why I start this topic with title "Completed Review and Rating system in Resources 6G"

I see. You are right. The is average rating from all shildren. I think that this will be possible for black ice. We will add feature "show rating summary" for children list and it will looks like on attached picture.

Also there will not be multirating field any more. We will integrate multirating in to type. It will be me option of rating parameters in type parameters. That is why it will be not hard to calculate average.

The only question now is, when can we have it ...?

I think month or two for Beta release.

True. And this is good part of creating extensions from the beginning. You can fix all problems you had before and implement everything you want but could not.

Thanx for the video Sergey, it looks great.
But I have one question, which was not understandable from the video.

Will author of the new review/article have a possibility to set ratings directly in process of creating this new review/article?

Because at a moment we can set ratings only, when our article is created and from video is also seen that ratings you set to already created articles.

Yes both. In process of creating and then later will be able to change any rating without editing article.

Right, my fault. I did not mentioned it and have not shown. But it is exist.

Great news, great features. Reviews and ratings reminds me on my older topic about user votings. i.e. sitewide limited votes, type limited votes, re-voke votes... all this is useful for competitions and contests. Also useful to have modules, that can display voting results/summaries/winner(s).
  • Sergey Romanov

By Sergey Romanov 3 months ago
    Maik, from your other topic
    Maik Kaune
Is it possible to restrict the vote feature to 1 vote (site-wide!). So, a visiter can only rate and vote for 1 entry.
Right now it is like this. Logged in user vote once per article. And public once per IP.
    • Maik Kaune

By Maik Kaune 3 months ago
Could public get a cookie as well? IMHO, that would give a little more control for "abuse". The results would become more trustful.
    • Sergey Romanov

By Sergey Romanov 3 months ago
Yes it is based cookie. It is just if cookies is cleared it check IP or DB

    Author AND user reviews?
As you know, I often mentioned "jReviews" in the past. One build-in feature is to show the authors rating... and the users rating. Both results are independent and in general its a nice way to have a professional review of the item... and additionally show and collect the visiters opinion (i.e. game or movie review sites).

How would you provide ratings for both user-groups?
  • Maik Kaune

By Maik KauneVIP 3 months ago
    Regarding your "complicated example"
Recently I had a special use case in my mind. Is it possible to build and display something like this:

Many locations like sport-centers and clubs have also a restaurant. How could I display and rate this kind of combination? I would like to have at least 2 average rating results. 1st (multy-rating) is for the sports-area, and the 2nd-multi-rating is for the restaurant-area. Both average results should be displayed close to each other...

    Example for a Bowling-Center:

    bowling ******* (8,5/10)
    restaurant **** (4,5/10)

Each average is the result of a seperate multi-rating with different criterias.

How to deal with that? As far as I can see, the build-in rating does not allow this in 1 type.
Do I have to use 2 different types? How to build a hassle-free type submission for the user? 2 types may confuse the users... or is it easier with your parent-child setup?
Do we still have a multi-rating field plugin?

    Thanks for listening.

    Result display options:

Is it possible to have different result-displays? I would like to have the option to show the results as:
    - typical images
    - numbers like 8,5/10
    - percentage like 80%

The previous multi-rating had just options to SHOW/HIDE average and total.

Does it make sense to have another output for simple "bars"? Like in poll-results? I think you also had something similar in like-it field.

    bowling ******* (8,5/10)

Are those different types? Or it is rating of one type?
    • Maik Kaune

By Maik Kaune 3 months ago
Actually, that was my question. Can it be 1 type with 2 multi-rating fields, and then two average results on 1 article page? If I would have to use 2 types... isn´t it to complicated and seperated for the end-user? The author or business-owner has only 1 location... he don´t want to add 2 different types...
    • Sergey Romanov

By Sergey Romanov 3 months ago
What would be the type that contain bowling, restaurant, ... rating in one? How would you call it for example. I just cannot think out scenario where it would be required? Please describe the case that would require it.
    • Maik Kaune

By Maik Kaune 3 months ago
Example case. The article author is the owner of a bowling-center ... or swimming-bath. This location has also a restaurant area. Both needs different rating criteria, but both are 1 type. Or call it submission-entry. I think, the author would expect to submit and enter his article in one go... its one location. But rating needs to be splitted on to different areas. And it needs to have to seperate average results.
  • Sergey Romanov

By Sergey Romanov 3 months ago

And both ratings have to be multi properties?
    • Maik Kaune

By Maik Kaune 3 months ago
:-) why not? ;-) Thats why i was asking, if BlackIce still have a seperate multi-rating field plugin. There is no field-plugin anymore?
    • Maik Kaune

By Maik Kaune 3 months ago
Example: Bath criteria (size, water quality, cleanliness). Restaurant criteria (taste, prices, service)
  • Sergey Romanov

    Maik Kaune
Example: Bath criteria (size, water quality, cleanliness). Restaurant criteria (taste, prices, service)
That totally make sense. Hmmm, I do not know what to say. If there is no field, then it is impossible. If we make field, then core rating make no sense.

    I have to think
    • Maik Kaune

By Maik Kaune 2 months ago
Yes, Sergey... BE the rating, BE the rating... use the force, Sergey. :-) Seriously, this might be a special case. But I think its a real-world example, maybe not so rare one might think at first time. Alternatives? Parent/Child setup? 1 Parent that serves as a container for two related childs... maybe to complicated for the average end-user...
    • Sergey Romanov

By Sergey Romanov 2 months ago
Too complicated and too heavy for complete multi-multi-rating
    • Maik Kaune

By Maik Kaune 2 months ago
so, we may need a field plugin ;-) Or a multiply/add feature in the core?! By the way, what is the MAIN reason and benefit of extending the core rating?
    • Sergey Romanov

By Sergey Romanov 2 months ago
The benefit is. If you add multiple rating field to type old records do not have it. If it is in the rating it immediately appear. Also it stores article rating in record field but not in field values table. And number of votes may be separated and displayed with number of comments or number bookmarks.
